Has all the protesting finally made an
impact on De Beers? De Beers is a founding partner of the Diamond Development Initiative (DDI) which was recently
announced to the public. The new group aims to address the problems faced by African diamond diggers, their
governments and the diamond industry. Additional members of the DDI include NGO Global Witness, Partnership Africa
Canada, Jeffrey Davidson (Communities and Small-scale Mining Program) and Martin Rapaport of the Rapaport Group. The
goal is to gather “all interested parties” to address the issues facing the diamond miners, communities and
governments. The plan is to hold a meeting in Africa in October or November. It makes sense for De Beers to make a good
faith effort to resolve at least some of the diamond-production-related issues considering the rate at which they are
opening new stores.
