Our adventuring sibling blog, Gadling, has a post after our own hearts. They report that the Carmen Lucia has
been acuqired by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The ring features a 23.1 carat Burmese ruby
flanked by two triangular diamonds. The ring is named after Carmen Lucia Buck who died in 2003. Her
husband, Peter Buck, one of the founders of the Subway chain, purchased the ruby in his wife’s name as a tribute to
her. The jewel has a muddy past, it was mined in the 1930s and has spent much of the time since then in private
hands. It is the largest ruby on display. Although the magic of Google would not yield to us the one number
we wanted to know (the closely guarded price of the ring), we can tell you that Burmese rubies often cost more per
carat than fine diamonds and that a 9.35 carat Burmese ruby sold at Christie’s last year for over $1.2 million so draw
your own conclusions.
